California Food and Justice Coalition
The Southern California-based CFJC, which represents dozens of statewide policy groups, has been one of the most vocal advocates of community food security. They are dedicated to building strong, sustainable, local and regional food systems that ensure access to affordable, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food for all people at all times. CFJC offers support to Farm to School programs nationwide.

Champlain Valley Localvores
We are a group of consumers interested in increasing the amount and diversity of local food produced in Vermont. While we live in the Chittenden county area and will be concentrating our efforts here, we hope you'll find this web site useful wherever you are. The centerpiece of our efforts is the Eat Local Challenge, in which we try to eat only locally grown and processed foods for up to an entire month. We are also spending more time this year on education, thru speakers at pot lucks and food preparation workshops.

Food Sense CHANGE improves the nutrition of limited income children and their families by teaching a nutrition curriculum enhanced by gardening, cooking and other hands-on activities. In addition to teaching classroom lessons, primarily in elementary schools, CHANGE instructors act as a support system and resource for teachers as they incorporate nutrition education into their daily classroom work. CHANGE instructors also participate in school family nights and other family or adult outreach activities.

GROWN Locally is a cooperative of 14 farm producers in the northeast corner of Iowa. Local Matters
Our belief is that everyone has a right to eat flavorful, fresh, locally grown food that is produced in a sustainable manner. Local Matters also operates The Greener Grocer, a “for profit” produce stand owned by the partners of Local Matters, which purchases products directly from the Central Ohio farm community. Beginning in August, the Greener Grocer will offer an "alternative" farmers market in five underserved, urban neighborhoods in Columbus, Ohio. The Greener Grocer's "Veggie Mobile" will arrive at a different community recreation center each afternoon, set up tables with fresh, nutritious, locally sourced fruits and produce and sell these items for an affordable price. The Greener Grocer's Veggie Mobile is able to accept EBT cards for sales transactions and is working to expand this program to local schools as part of our "Farm to School" efforts in the fall of 2008.

They procure vegetables, fruits, meats, cheese, honey, maple syrup, and dry beans from small and mid-sized farmers from around the state and sell the products in CSA, farmers’ markets, retail, roadside stands, and directly to institutions.

Michael Fields Agricultural Institute (MFAI)was founded in Wisconsin in 1984 as a public, nonprofit research and education institute to develop and share agricultural concepts and practices that promote resource-conserving, ecologically sustainable and economically viable food and farming systems. Its mission is to enhance the fertility of the soil, the quality of food, the health of animals, and the strength of the human spirit by revitalizing the culture of agriculture. The institute serves both farmers and the consuming public that depend on multi-functional agriculture systems for healthy food, natural resource management and vibrant rural communities. MFAI programs serve a wide range of farmers and gardeners - from small and mid-size organic farmers to larger conventional producers. While many of MFAI programs focus on Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest, others are national and international in scope.

Michigan Integrated Food & Farming Systems
Co-sponsored a summer garden and school project with Grand Rapids Public Schools and will be pursuing an expanded farm to school effort through a Kellogg grant.
Michigan Land Use Institute
Coordinates the Broccoli, Books, and Bread project in Traverse City Area Public Schools. MLUI is also exploring and developing ways to include fresh, local foods in school snacks and meals.
Michigan Land Use Institute
The Institute developed the Web site as part of its ongoing efforts to foster farm-to-school sales and enrichment activities.The farm-to-school Web site is the third the Institute has launched to grow jobs, build health, and protect land by promoting local farm food. Its Taste the Local Difference Wholesale site connects farms with chefs, grocers, and other wholesale buyers; its new Get Farming site matches new farmers to existing farmers or other landowners who want to sell or lease their land.
So far, more than 30 area schools. The Institute is also planning a farm-to-school conference with assistance from the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District and other school partners. Scheduled for March 12 in Traverse City, it will offer workshops for cooks, food buyers, parents, teachers, students, and farmers.

Missoula Food Bank
At Missoula Food Bank, our mission is to respond to the emergency food needs of the hungry and work to reduce the incidence of hunger and its effects on individuals, families and the community. Each year we distribute more than 250 tons of food - canned goods, fresh produce, bakery items, cereal, baby food, formula and more - to Missoula area residents. That's enough to serve roughly 1,000 households a month.
Mixed Greens: A Children
The mission of Mixed Greens is to teach the children of the Grand Rapids area the value of health and Michigan agriculture through the growing, preparing and sharing of food using schoolyard vegetable gardens and kitchen classrooms. Mixed Greens is working collaboratively across the sectors with community institutions to create, promote, and support schoolyard garden and kitchen classroom programming. Currently, Mixed Greens oversees garden and kitchen programming in several Grand Rapids Public Schools and are working on the development of an independent, inner-city vegetable garden conservatory with commercial kitchen for their youth-based educational activities.

National Center for Appropriate Technology
Since 1976 the National Center for Appropriate Technology has been serving economically disadvantaged people by providing information and access to appropriate technologies that can help improve their lives. Practical Farmers of Iowa
"Farmers helping farmers make decisions" is the self-description formulated by the PFI board of directors, 10 producers elected by the membership from 5 membership districts in Iowa. The membership of 500 also includes, as associate (nonvoting) members, many non-farmers and people from outside Iowa.
PFI has carried out an on-farm research program since 1987 and has developed procedures that farmers can use to conduct and analyze their own research. PFI members have accomplished more than 400 of these experiments. PFI works intensively with a group of two to three dozen farmer-researchers, "cooperators," who demonstrate their practices at farm field days. A second network of community-based groups pursues a variety of projects, from beginning farmer efforts, to agroforestry, to holistic management, to community-supported agriculture ("CSA"), to a county-wide manure brokerage.
Pride of the Prairie
Pride of the Prairie is a collaborative effort whose purpose is to promote the production and use of locally grown food and develop a regional food system in western Minnesota that provides good, nutritious food, nurtures a healthy environment and provides economic opportunity for area entrepreneurs.
Public Health Law and Policy: Planning for Healthy Places
Planning for Healthy Places at Public Health Law & Policy works to engage public health advocates in the land-use decision-making process throughout California. We develop tools for training advocates in the relationship between the built environment and public health, and provide technical assistance for creating and implementing land use policies that support healthier communities.

Ripple Riley Thomas, long-time growers, packers and shippers of fresh pears, began developing a market to distribute small fresh pears directly to California School Districts. RRT now contracts with many growers in California ahead of their growing season ensuring consistent pricing for both growers and school food service programs. An additional benefit is the cost savings that school programs experience by working directly with the grower.

A local grass-roots committee is forming to establish and strengthen the link between what is grown on local farms and what is served in the cafeteria in schools. The committee is seeking energetic, enthusiastic community members who are interested in joining a new Farm-to-School Committee. The committee will meet this spring to brainstorm the potential advantages of buying locally grown produce and incorporating it into South Haven Public Schools' food service programs and other school and community-sponsored venues where food is served. The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition is a national alliance of farm, rural development, and conservation groups that organized in 1988 to affect federal agriculture policy. By bringing grassroots perspectives to the table normally dominated by big business, SAC levels the playing field and gives voice to sustainable and organic farmers.

SAREP, University of California, Davis has been involved in community food systems and farm to school for several years. SAREP staff are also the leaders in conducting comprehensive evaluations of farm to school programs across California – Davis, Winters, Berkeley and Compton.
Sustainable Community Gardens - Full Circle Farm
Sustainable Community Gardens is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the renewal of local, sustainable food systems throughout Silicon Valley. The Jersey Fresh Information Exchange
New Jersey farmers grow some of the best produce in the country. To help raise consumer awareness about New Jersey produce and get it into new retail locations, Rutgers Cooperative Extension piloted an innovative produce distribution and merchandising project in 2004.

The New North Florida Marketing Cooperative
The New North Florida Marketing Cooperative
A group of innovative African-American farmers formed the New North Florida Cooperative Association Inc. in 1995. The goal of the cooperative was to provide marketing services to the participating farmers, collectively sell produce to markets such as local school districts, and ultimately to increase the amount of product being sold, thereby increasing the farmers’ income.
The North Carolina Farm to School Program
The North Carolina Farm to School Program is run through a collaborative effort between the Markets and Food Distribution Divisions of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Affairs and the Department of Defense. Food Distribution surveys North Carolina schools to determine the quantity of produce that the school can use and then turns the total quantities over to the Department of Defense who works with the Markets Division to locate the farmers to procure the product. Food Distributions picks up the product from the farmers and delivers it to the schools. The Department of Defense then bills the schools for payment.
